Internship

About the Internship Program

At NCCD, our internship program offers individuals the opportunity to enhance their research skills and expand their knowledge on critical issues pertaining to youth and incarceration. Interns are matched with Senior Researchers and Research Associates on projects that cover a wide-array of issues concerning youth affected both directly and indirectly by the justice system. Interns contribute to NCCD’s research reports, process evaluations, and community engagement work on topics such as mental health, immigration and acculturation, disproportionate minority contact, gang intervention, and best practice models of reform.

Intern Attributes

NCCD interns possess a broad-span of intellectual interests and life experiences that offer important and dynamic insights to the variety of projects executed by our organization. The ideal candidate will have an avid interest in research and youth development, and may be currently studying or pursuing careers in human development, education, sociology, legal studies, psychology, social work, ethnic studies, feminist studies, public health, public policy, or another related field. Prospective interns must be detail oriented, organized, possess a professional work ethic, and be enthusiastic to gain new knowledge. Bilingual/bicultural in either Spanish or an Asian/Pacific Islander language, and familiarity with immigrant/refugee issues are highly desirable attributes. Previous research experience or knowledge of Excel, Access, and SPSS is also beneficial, but not required. People impacted by issues of incarceration are strongly encouraged to apply.

Recruitment Process

NCCD recruits interns on a trimester basis (fall, spring, and summer). Interns must complete 120 hours per term (10-20 hours/week) in order to receive a stipend. Academic credit is unavailable.
